Cowichan 1 - 2 Grizzlies @Island Savings Centre, Duncan, Sept 15th

The War of the Malahat has begun! 21 penalties given out for the (almost) line brawl that occured right after the game ended and one of our players received a sucker punch. His team mates jumped to his defense and there was fighting mayhem all over the ice!
But back to hockey! Despite outshooting the Caps throughout the game the boys from the wrong side of the Malahat scored first only 1.22 minutes into the game. Ryan Hanes beat our goaltender Michael Stiliadis. Great hockey followed and the 977 Cowichan fans got their money's worth with thrills, near misses, a puck off the crossbar and lots of roughing! This carried on throughout the second period which ended with the Caps ahead of our Grizz one to nothing. Period 3 started and it looked like the Grizz could not even buy a goal! It certainly was not for lack of effort! They outplayed and out shot the caps almost 2 to 1. But Derek Dun, the Caps goaltender was his awesome self and kept the Caps in the game.
At 10.45 of period 3 someone must have sent a message to the hockey Gods because they allowed Leo Fitzgerald with help from Mitch Meek, to finally beat Dun's magic goaltending! The gods must have liked what they saw because they allowed Gerry Fitzgerald to score at 13.15 with Blake Thompson's help. This turned out to be the winning goal.

The awesome threesome (The Fitzgerald triplets) always seem to come through when we need them. They are a treat to watch on the ice!
At the end of the game all hell broke loose after one of our players was sucker punched. 'The ice was one rolling mass of black and white squirming and writhing like the Green Men had done in jest the night before! I hope no one got really hurt in that melee, because it sure looked like a recipe for broken noses and teeth missing! Not to mention broken knuckles and fingers. However at the end of the bru-ha-ha it looked like all the Grizz had had a great time and even remembered to salute their EXTREMELY NOISY travelling fan contingent! (Note to you new Grizzlies players---you ain't heard nothin' yet till these loud Grizz fans REALLY start yelling! So get ready for it, these fans are rabid!!) haha.
Just so you will have an idea of what happened at the end of the game I am going to post the list of penalties handed out:
