BCHL Goings On!!!!
Former Grizzlie, Taylor Love is on the move in the BCHL, as his rights have been traded from the Coquitlam Express to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
Love, in 21 games with the Express had 1 goal and 7 assists for 8 pts.
Potentially it looks as though Cowichan Valley Capitals power forward Matt Grant, has moved up to the WHL's Everett Silvertips at this time. Eighteen year old old Grant, has scored 20 points for the Caps this season. Interesting move, considering that Zach McPhee another Silvertips forward, had his BCHL rights acquired by the Grizzlies, in the recent Sean Robertson trade.

Victoria Grizzlies v's Alberni Valley Bulldogs @ Bear Mountain Arena, Dec 30th, 2011
Not the way the Grizzlies would have envisioned closing out 2011.
Tonights game was a rusty, didn't really get going tonight Grizzlies team v's a determined Bulldogs team who fought for every puck.
1st Period: Saw the Bulldogs start with a high tempo feel to their game which they carried through all three periods. Garret Rockafellow, would be forced into some early saves and kept the Dogs at bay, who out shot the Grizz 14-8 in the first period. However, it would be the Grizzlies who would get on the board first, as Gonzales and Murphy would combine to put an inch perfect shot through to Ten Vaanholt, who in turn would give Alberni goalie, Max Fenkell no chance to make it 1-0 Grizzlies.
Both teams would have there chances on the powerplay in the first, including a Grizzlies 5 on 3 advantage. But, it would be the Bulldogs who would make the man advantage count as former Victoria forward, Dylan Nowarkowski would finally beat Rockafellow after 16 minutes to tie it up 1-1 at the end of the first period.
2nd Period: The Bulldogs really looked the better team in the second as they forechecked well, battled for the puck and really closed the Grizzlies down in their own end. They peppered Rockafellow's goal, but Garrett would hold firm, keeping Victoria alive in the second period.
Despite having the only two powerplays in the second, the Grizzlies couldn't capitalise on them.
3rd Period: Really, a repeat of the 2nd period as Victoria couldn't get anything going offensively and Alberni looking the more likely to score and score they did. Just two minutes into the third, would see Walker Hyland power a shot by Rockafellow for the 2-1 lead. Despite a little pressure towards the end of the third, the Grizzlies couldn't solve Fenkell and the Bulldogs came out deserved victors on the night, 2-1.
Game Thoughts Grizzlies: Maybe to much Turkey or something along those lines, as Victoria really didn't compete tonight. Garret Rockafellow, was the only bright light in a game that saw them drop two points on home ice to the bottom placed team .Managing only 16 shots on goal tonight is another sore point on this defeat.
Victoria, simply has to raise there game to keep pace in the playoff race. I imagine an early start for the boys in the morning.
Game Thoughts Bulldogs: Quite possibly the best Bulldogs performance I've seen at Bear Mtn in a few seasons. They looked liked a team that hasn't given up on the playoff race and look ready to kick-start their season.
Standouts Victoria -
Garrett Rockafellow: Was excellent again, making some key saves in what could have been a more lob sided defeat. Rockafellow, is making a louder claim to the starting job for next season.
Standouts Bulldogs -
Justin Morello: Quick on the puck with good hands and really made life difficult for the Grizzlies defence tonight.
Evan Tironese : Worked tirelessly tonight and played a solid game.
Dylan Nowarkowski : A player I would love to see back in a Grizzlies uniform. Did a bit of everything on the ice tonight.
Attendance - 979 Shots on Goal - Grizz 16 and Dogs35
Powerplays - Grizz 0 for 6 and Dogs 2 for 5
Grizz Extra's - Mitch Guiel, is no longer with the Grizzlies and has left the club

Player Quotes going into the second half of the season
The Grizz Roar's, roving reporter Mike Mellings caught up with Nolan De Jong and Garrett Rockafellow, on what the Grizzlies need to do to be successful in the second half of the season:
Nolan De Jong: "We need to tighten up defensively and play a full 60 minutes. We're putting together a great 50 minutes and then we'll have a lapse for 5 minutes and all of a sudden there's a bunch of goals in our net. We need to play a full 60 minutes."
Garrett Rockafellow: " We need to start playing a full 60 minutes, lots of games we'll play a solid 50 or 55 minutes, but in this league that's not going to cut it. We need to play a full 60 minutes, we can't have the mental lapses that we've been having, if we play a full 60 minutes that will help out a lot."

So back to it.....
Most of the BCHL teams have been in action last night or will be tonight, except the Grizzlies.
This means as far as games played, the black and gold for most of the year have played 4 to 5 more games then the rest of the division. Most of the teams should have played as many games as Victoria, after these two days. However, after Weds and Thursday night, the Grizzlies will be in 6th place with the potential of being 3 to 5 points behind 4th and 5th place Nanaimo and Coquitlam.
So this means, we kinda have to beat Alberni tomorrow night(Friday) to stay on there heels and keep pace.
Hopefully the Grizzlies will have Myron, Lawson, Tucker and Walchuk fit again with just Pernerowski(I'm told) still on the DL at this time.
With the Grizzlies a game under the .500 mark it's time to put a good run together and hopefully be in the last four in the Coastal Conference.
Our Opponents on Friday, Alberni, will also hopefully be looking to try and get there season going. They are currently in last place in the Coastal and under new Coach Kevin Willison. Alberni, snipers Morello, ex Grizz Nowarkowski along with the focused goaltending of Max Fenkell, will ensure the Grizzlies aren't in for an easy night of it.
The Grizzlies have played the Bulldogs three times this season; with the Grizzlies ahead 2 games to 1 in the series at this stage in the season!!!!
Now remember it's pirate night and bring your noisemakers as we cheer the Grizzlies onto victory on homes ice:

Mid-season Report from the Armchair fans
So it's Christmas and 2012 is almost upon us, meaning of course we are at the half way point of proceedings in 2011/12 season. So what does that mean to the Grizzles????
One way to sum it up is, we are in contention for a playoff spot despite a slow start and a bit of an upheaval in the roster recently. However, Victoria are in for a battle to claim one of the top four coastal conference playoff spot. Cowichan and Powell River seem to be on course to lock up two of the four spots which leaves the rest of the contenders, to go tooth and nail for the other two places.
Surrey, Nanaimo, Coquitlam and the Grizz look like they are fairly evenly matched on paper. Also, at this stage we can't rule out the bottom two of Alberni and Langley, but, it would take a hell of an effort from both teams to get back in playoff contention.
Surrey, are a little more experienced and are quite a well rounded team.Victoria has had trouble getting the upper hand on the Eagles this season who with the Morley brothers and a quality goaltender in Andrew Hunt, should take a playoff spot
Nanaimo, is a bit of wild card. They've added two nice pieces with Sones in defence and a quality AJHL scorer in Dan Correale recently. The Clippers forecheck well and do compete for three periods of hockey most games. Coach Vandekamp has a never say die attitude.
Coquitlam, after a slow start to the campaign have reloaded with a couple of shrewd trades and a little help from two ex-Vancouver Giants in Conner Redmond and Zach Hodder. Express goalie, Cole Huggins has been one of the most consistent goalies in the league this season.
And what about the Grizz:
In a recent poll on the Grizz Roar Blog, we asked "will the Grizzlies be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline"? The response from that was 70 % sellers and 30% buyers (go for it in other words)
The firepower is there and then some. In Murphy, Myron, Ten Vaanholt, Maron and quality secondary scoring from Holland, Kaiser and Hansen goals shouldn't be a problem for the last couple of months of the season.
The defence has tightened up a bit recently with Nolan deJong really looking the part in his rookie season. When the Grizz traded for Stefan Gonzales, it ensured that a much needed steady/experienced presence was inserted into the defensive core. With Taylor Pernerowski out at this time and Sean Robertson traded, the Grizz are without two solid and experienced BCHL defenders. Pernerowski loss, is tough due to his effectiveness on special teams. At this moment in time there are a lot of question marks on defence for the Grizzlies.
Goaltending has been a little hot and cold this season with Tucker and Rockafellow looking great one night and not so much the next game. Tucker's confidence has grown a lot recently and has look like the goaltender he can be at times, but, consistency is a must from here on in. Rockafellow, has looked very good lately with the rookie goaltender adjusting to the Junior A game well. For the the Grizzlies to "go for it" solid goaltending is a must.
Potential Buyers Scenario:
So if the Grizzlies are buyers what then? Do they bring in a couple of experienced defenders or maybe a player or two cut from there WHL teams. If you make a couple of trades, chances are your going to give up futures at the end of the season. Now the whole futures thing, has decimated Grizzlies teams in the past as we always seem to give up one too many futures at seasons end (anyone remember what happened at the end of the 2008/09 RBC cup season). But, that's hockey.
Again with the firepower the Grizzlies have, it might be hard not to go for it and take a run at a long playoff drive. The Grizzlies have usually always gone that route and do make a few trades(more than a few some years) and bulk the squad up for a run. As a Grizz fan you do respect the fact that you know the organisation wants to give it a good run every year at this stage of the season.
However, caution is advised this time. All roads out of the Coastal will more than likely go through Duncan and/or Powell River; a tough prospect over a 7 game series. Then, if you make it out of the Coastal Conference, you have to go up against the Juggernaut Penticton Vees (pretty safe bet) in the Fred Page Cup.
Potential Sellers Scenario:
The Grizzlies has secured some pretty solid futures from the Vipers in the Sean Robertson trade and if they are to trade some of the rosters bigger guns for more futures, they should have the platform to bring in a younger very talented squad next season. The case and point for this is, this years version of the Cowichan Valley Captials. When the Salmon Arm Silverbacks acquired former Grizz player Mike Hammond from the Caps last mid-season, the Caps set themselves up with some dynamite futures in the form of Gannon, Mistal and other futures. The Caps also traded Aimes and St.Denis to the Vees for further futures and also netted Charles and Iacobellis, which in turn set the foundation of a strong Caps squad this season.
As the Grizzlies have a few of their big names moving onto the NCAA season next year, it could be tempting to sell!!!!
The drawback from this, is just that, being a seller with the talent we have on this team at this time. There are some real quality players and watching the likes of Murphy and Myron in the final season in Junior in there home town has been awesome.
We'll just have to wait and see. Whatever the outcome at trade deadline time, which is around mid January...all we can say is GO GRIZZ GO!!!

With the halfway mark of the Victoria Grizzlies 2011-12 season upon us, the members of the Grizzlies social media team voted on our choices for the mid-season player awards. Here are the results:
MVP - Wes Myron:
MVP - Wes Myron:
The Grizzlies first line center has shown time and again why he is heading to Boston University of the NCAA on scholarship next season. With 40 points in just 22 games he leads the team with 1.8 points-per-game. He also has scored 3 game winning goals so far this year. (Runner-up: Wade Murphy)
Top Offensive Player - Wade Murphy:
Top Offensive Player - Wade Murphy:
The BCHL’s third leading point scorer with 59 points in 35 games including an incredible 23 game point streak is an easy choice for top offensive player. (Runner-up Wes Myron)
Most Improved Player (from the beginning of the year): Chase Kaiser:
Most Improved Player (from the beginning of the year): Chase Kaiser:
With 10 points in 29 games his point total is not eye-catching, but he does the little things well and he has been steadily improving offensively and has earned the coaches trust enough to be chosen to take and make a penalty shot in overtime recently to beat Cowichan Valley. (Runner-up: Nolan De Jong)
Hardest Worker - Cameron Lawson:
Hardest Worker - Cameron Lawson:
With 18 points in 32 games he has put up respectable offensive numbers and is trusted by the coaches to play the point on the first power play unit. He seldom loses a puck battle along the boards and consistently outworks bigger players to come away with the puck. If his current injury keeps him out of action for any length of time, he will be sorely missed. (Runner-up: Mike Moran)
Top Offensive Defenceman - Taylor Pernerowski:
Top Offensive Defenceman - Taylor Pernerowski:
Averaging almost a point-per-game from the blueline with 21 points in 27 games to go along with 4 power play goals. His absence due to a concussion has been felt the last couple of weeks. (Runner-up: Stefan Gonzales)
Top Defensive Defenceman - Stefan Gonzales:
Top Defensive Defenceman - Stefan Gonzales:
His mid-season acquisition and subsequent pairing with rookie Nolan De Jong has really helped solidify the back end for the Grizzlies and given the 16 year old De Jong the confidence to take more offensive chances knowing he has a veteran to cover for him. (Runner-up: Nolan De Jong)
Top rookie( no previous BCHL or WHL team): Nolan De Jong
Top rookie( no previous BCHL or WHL team): Nolan De Jong
The smooth skating 16 year old rookie started slowly and took some time to adjust to the BCHL, but after settling in he has consistently been one of the Grizzlies top defenceman. With 7 points in 31 games the youngster has the offensive instincts to drastically improve in that area. His potential should make Grizzlies fans excited for the future. (Runner-up Garrett Rockafellow)
Top Newcomer (prior BCHL or WHL team): Mike Moran:
Top Newcomer (prior BCHL or WHL team): Mike Moran:
The import from Marshfield, Mass. has been a standout two-way player with 41 points in 33 games, 7 power play goals, 4 game winning goals and 1 shorthanded goal. His recent addition to the top line to play with Murphy and Myron on the 3M line has produced positive results, Moran is a good leader and hard worker who despite being a first year Grizzlies player has been given an “A“ by the coaching staff. Moran is another member of the Grizzlies heading off to Boston University on scholarship. (Runner-up: Jarryd Ten Vaanholt)
Write up by Mike Mellings(nice work Mike).

The Newest Grizzlies Mitch Guiel
Recent addition to the Grizzlies Roster #17 Mitch Guiel, recently made his Grizzlies debut on Friday v's the Surrey Eagles. The 17 yr old forward from Langley, comes to the Grizzlies after an 18 game stint with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds. I have seen Guiel play 4 WHL games this season, 2 in Seattle and 2 With the T'birds v's the Victoria Royals recently. Although Mitch didn't record a point for the T'birds, he comes across as a quick attacking forward who will add some depth to the forwards ranks.
Last season Guiel, had been playing in PIJHL with the Jnr B, Aldergove Kodiaks and put in some very good numbers.
Here are Mitch Guiel's career stats from eliteprospects.com

Victoria Grizzlies 2 - 4 Cowichan Valley Capitals @ Bear Mountain Arena, Dec 17, 2011
Not the way the Grizzlies wanted to limp into the Christmas break, however, it's far from doom and gloom. With 4 points dropped in these last two games it does mean the Grizzlies find themselves a little of the pace for the top 3 playoff spot in the Coastal Conference, but, they are just three points out in the battle for the forth placed and final place off spot.
The energy and intensity for the Grizzlies v's the Caps was certainly improved on Friday's performance which was certainly helped by the return of Wes Myron and Chase Kaiser.
First Period - Saw both teams ready to scrap for a victory and it would be the Grizzlies who would strike first. A beautiful one/two from Murphy and Myron saw them carve up the Caps defence, as Wes would be Cap goalie Rouleau to make it 1-0 home team. The Caps with three potent lines wouldn't back down and forced a number of good saves from Grizz goalie Garrett Rockafellow. The Caps, would make the break through to tie the game as ex-Silverback Devin Gannon would beat Rockafellow to make it 1-1 at the end of the first.
Second Period - Would see some good chances created from the new 2nd line of Moran, Kasier and Collins, but, couldn't make the breakthrough against Caps goalie Rouleau.
With referee Ryan Benbow returning to the type of inconsistency we where used to from him a few years ago, a suspect powerplay for Cowichan saw Steve Iacobellis another player who loves scoring against the black and gold, put the Caps ahead 2-1 on the powerplay. Garrett Rockafellow, was excellent throughout the game and especially in the 2nd making some key saves to keep the damage down after the Caps had camped out in the Grizzlies zone for the last 10 mins of the 2nd period.
Another Benbow head-scratche,r saw Wade Murphy go to the penalty box despite being pushed into the goalie??????. Thankfully there would be no further scoring from the Caps in the second.
Third Period - The Grizzlies came out with a bit more energy and purpose. Three minutes into the third, the Caps would become the victim of the refereeing this time, as Troy Paterson would be sent to the box for a trip(looked like it was 50/50 going for the puck). The Grizzlies would get there special teams going on the PP as Moran, would tie the game from Murphy and Schmeisser as the shot would just cross the line after a little controversy, with the Caps claiming Rouleau had stopped it before it went over. The goal stood, to make it a 2-2 hockey game at that point.
Now, this was the game turning point. The Grizzlies had just put the puck in the back of the net again at the mid-way point of the third on the PP, only for it to stunningly be called off by yes....that man Benbow, for goalie interference. It looked clean(without sounding to biased),however, no goal was the call. Immediately after that dodgy call, the Caps would would race down the ice shorthanded where Caps forward Logan Proulx, would beat Rockafellow to make it a 3-2 Caps lead.
Despite both teams having some chances in the final 10 minutes, the Caps would hold on and would settle the argument on an empty net goal, from ex-Regina Pat Mikael Jung.
4-2 Caps would be your final.
Game thought Grizzlies: Very much an improved effort from the Surrey game ,but, again another two key points lost on home ice. The guys did put in a worthy performance against one of the better Caps teams in recent years and might count themselves a little unlucky from this game, due to some very poor officiating. Now, I never like to give the Zebra's a tough time as they have a heck of a job to do. But, the officiating simply wasn't up to standard tonight and it quite frankly may have decided the outcome of the game.
The top two lines gave there best shot and Myles Powell looked dangerous when he was on shift tonight.
This is a good opportunity for the boys to go home, get rested and healthy to come back after the Xmas break ready to go!!!!
Game Thoughts Caps: I have been impressed with the Caps all season and tonight was no exception. The odd couple of Ingram and Purinton have Cowichan playing three periods of hockey consistently and in Rouleau and Dun they have found themselves a tandem to take them deep in the playoffs. They have three good attacking lines and in Muto, Robak, Sherbinin, London and Paterson a defensive corp that doesn't give up a lot of goals.
Grizz Standouts
Wade Murphy - Was determined and was really clicking as much as he could with Myron and Ten Vaanholt tonight. Showed good energy and purpose as always.
Jaden Schmeisser - Has shown he belongs in Junior A has been one of the Grizzlies better defenders in recent weeks. Not afraid to throw a hit and doesn't turn the puck over.
Garrett Rockafellow - His last three starts have been excellent and has really shown what he's capable of at this level. Is certainly helping his cause to become a number one goalie in the BCHL either this season or next.
Attendence - 854 Powerplays - Caps 2 for 5 and Grizz 1 for 6
Shots on Goal - Caps 36 and Grizz 24
.

Victoria Grizzlies 2 - 5 Surrey Eagles @ Bear Mtn Arena, Dec 17, 2011
Not one of the games to remember as far as 2011 goes. A depleted Grizzlies line up, had trouble against a Surrey team that looked good for the moment the puck dropped. Garret Rockafellow would start this one, after Jamie Tucker's injury on Weds night.
First Period - Before the crowd had settled into their seats, the Eagles went on the attack and after only 20 secs, Brandon Tanev(younger brother of the Canucks Chris Tanev), had made it 1-0. The Grizzlies looked a little shell-shocked and would go further behind two minutes later, when one half of one the best brother combination we've seen in the BCHL in recent years, Tyler Morley, who was excellent on he night made it 2-0. Stefan Gonzales, had trouble clearing the puck and committed the turn over, allowing Hennoun to set up Tyler.
The Grizzlies who had 4 AP's in the line up, including new signing from the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds Mitch Guiel, seemed to be chasing the Eagles forwards around for much of the first.
Garrett Rockafellow, would start to settle down a bit and pulled off a couple of nice saves as the period went on. New Assistant Captain Jarryd Ten Vaanholt, would bring the Grizzlies back into it, as he would fire a shot through the legs of Eagles goalie Hunt to get the Grizzlies within one, with a little help for Muprhy and Gonzales. 2-1 Eagles at the end of the first.
Second Period - Was mainly all Surrey as the Grizzlies had problems getting anything going in the offensive dept. The Eagles top line of Morley, Brandon Morley and ex-clipper Brayden Jaw where impressive on the night and would make it 3-1 Eagles, as Brandon would score from Tyler and Jaw two minutes in. After peppering Rockafellow's net, ten minutes later the Eagles would add to there lead making it 4-1 as Alex Hagan would put the Eagles comfortably ahead.
Third Period - Would see a ray of hope as Alex Holland would score his 10th of the season to make it 4-2 Eagles as the Victoria started to get some pucks on net midway through the third, but, that's where the revival ended. Tyler Morley, would make sure the contest was dead and buried 3 minutes before the end as he would hammer a shot by Rockafellow to make it a 5-2 Eagles final.
Game Thoughts Grizzlies - It's not often that the Grizzlies get outplayed at home or don't turn in a good effort even in defeat. However, tonight was a tough loss which wasn't helped by the injuries and a number of new faces still getting to know each other. The issue from this game is, it's two points dropped against a playoff rival at home and they where well beaten tonight. The boys should come out with a little more fire v's Cowichan tonight.
Game Thoughts Surrey - Well coached and played a solid game of hockey tonight. They Morley brothers where superb on the night and also the ever reliable Andrew Hunt in goal for the Eagles, kept the Grizzlies at bay.

Grizzlies on the injury list!!!!
The Grizzlies have been relying a lot on there associate players(AP's) in recent weeks. In the run up to Christmas, that doesn't look like it's going to change for the home games coming up against Surrey and Cowichan on Friday and Saturday nights.
With Taylor Pernerowski recovering back in Ontario, Myron, Kaiser, Walchuk and now goaltender Jamie Tucker on Victoria's injury list, it just keeps getting longer!!!
AP's for the Grizzlies such as Schmisser(Saanich Braves) and Kemmler(Oceanside Generals) have really impressed in there Grizzlies appearances this season.
Here is a list of the current Grizzlies AP list for the 2011/12 season:
