VIJHL expansion on the Westshore and Nanaimo

Westshore (name to be announced soon)

So official announcements from the VIJHL  regarding expansion for the 2012/13 season will be finalized and confirmed in the coming weeks.
Four Westshore businessmen will be putting into play a Jnr B team, to play out of Bear Mtn Arena (not the new Westhills Arena it was rumoured to be) where the determination to forge proper working relationships with the Juan de Fuca minor hockey, other minor hockey groups around the area and also the Victoria Grizzlies, should have a very stable and successful team on there hands. The new team rumoured to be called the Westshore Wolves should have a good selection of a number of promising young players coming out of the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies ranks, which should bode well for this fledgling Westshore team.
The new Westshore team, looks like there trying for Weds night home games which shouldn't conflict to much with other Jnr B and Jnr A teams in the area.
To be sure, this team has in no way any affliction to the last Westshore team the Stingers, which folded half way through the 2010/11 season. The Stingers demise, was brought on by poor management, a lack of ice time and a player revolt.

Nanaimo Buccaneers (rumoured name)

Also hoping to ice a team for the VIJHL 2012/13 season, which will play out of the Nanaimo Ice Centre (potentially Frank Crane Arena)is a new Nanaimo jnr B team, which is being brought to life by former Kerry Park Islanders owners Phil and Brenda Levesque.
Nanaimo, which should be a good fit for the league and is a city well known as a solid hockey town. A Jnr B team should thrive in the Harbour City and at this time are looking to play their home games on Thursday nights.
The Jnr B, should excite the managment team/fans of the Nanaimo Clippers and should make a for a very promising affiliate between the two clubs for developing local players of the 16-20 yr old age group, in the Nanaimo area.
The name Buccaneers, was originally the name of a former Nanaimo Jnr B team, which played out of the old Nanaimo Civic Arena in the 1970's.
Although reported by the Times Colonist's, Mario Annicchiarico that the new Nanaimo franchise is a go the for 2012/13, however, this may not be the case due to ice time for practices and a few other loose ends that need to be addressed first.

With two new teams added to the frey for 2012/13, this expands the VIJHL from 7 to 9 teams.
I am speculating, but, the most likely realignment for the North and South Divisions for the league should look something like this:

North Division                                                              South Division

Oceanside Generals                                                      Victoria Cougars
Comox Valley Glacier Kings                                       Saanich Braves
Campbell River Storm                                                  Pennisula Panthers
Nanaimo (Buccaneers)                                                 Kerry Park Islanders
                                                                                      Westshore

Myron catches the attention of the Canucks

Sources in and around Bear Mountain have commented on, that the Vancouver Canucks have been watching Wes Myron with great interest. And with good reason, not only did Wes have an outstanding 2011/12 season before it was cut shot with a shoulder injury, he possess nearly all the tools to make that jump to the pro ranks in the near future. Skill, speed, intelligence, his passing ability is out of this world and a nose for goal has made Myron one of the most feared forwards in the BCHL in recent seasons. Perhaps the only part of Wes's game that may need a little work is his hitting and getting a bit more physical in the corners.

Wes in Action

Myron's hard work and play, quite rightly had him selected for the World Junior A challenge in Langley, BC where he become a key component of Team Canada West' gold medal tournament victory.
As Wes is on his way to one of the best hockey NCAA programs in the U.S, Boston University next season. Catching the attention of the Vancouver Canucks will only give this talented Victoria native, some exciting options in his upcoming hockey career.

Wes, it has been a pleasure watching you play and seeing your progress over the last three seasons.

Game Report by Tony Burrows

Once again our shorthanded team gave their fans a thrilling game! These guys just never seem to give up! The hockey is fast paced and very exciting. Taylor Pears, who was named First Star for the second time in a row was truly amazing to watch. The team in front of him was very strong and all the boys played their hearts out. It was very unfortunate that they did not have a little 'puck luck' in this game as the outcome could easily have been the other way around! Special mention to Kevin Smith who was named the game's Third Star! Kevin---Thanks for sticking with the team and helping so much. You can really notice the difference in the way the team plays now you are back after your injury! And Cam Lawson! Congrats on an awesome game. You are so much fun to watch on the ice! Stefan Gonzales, your play is sure getting strong. You are a huge asset to your team. Jaden Schmeisser, Braxton Bilois, Alex Holland, Myles Powell, Mike Sandor, Nolan De Jong , CJ Lillies, I hereby declare you all First Stars of the game! Considering that every one of you is actually playing for 2 players you guys are amazing! I have got no idea how so few players can keep up that pace for an entire 60 minutes of hockey. It truly amazes me how some of you guys can switch from defense to forward and then when the goalie is down you can become an extra goaltender! You guys are getting a chance to become something that not very many other BCHL players can do and that is be a good ALL AROUND player! Necessity breeds innovation! Great game guys! The experience you guys are getting right now through the 'school of hard knocks' will be invaluable to you as your career in hockey continues!

3 stars of the game:

1* Taylor Pears (quite right too)   2* Clayton Chessa      3* Kevin Smith

Attendence: 882                     Shots on Goal : Grizzlies 27 and Clippers 38
Powerplays: Grizzlies 1 for 6 and Clippers 0 for 1

Victoria Grizzlies 4 - 3 Langley Rivermen @ Bear Mountain Arena, Feb 24, 2012

A deserved home win, the first in quite some time saw a confident Grizzlies team complete hard for 3 periods against a determined Langley squad in a basement tussle at the 'Bear' on Friday night. The Grizzles who were able to ice 3 forward lines and 6 defenders, which also saw Kevin Smith playing a fair amount of time as a forward, having 15 skaters(we have been icing 13 recently) sure makes a difference and with good effect tonight. The Grizzlies welcomed back Mark McLellan and Mitchell Smith back into the lineup tonight after missing last weekend's Powell River trip. No AP's where available due to the VIJHL having a full playoff schedule at this time.

1st Period: The Grizzlies and Rivermen both came out of the gates with lots of energy, with the Grizzlies forward lines looking in the mood to give Langley goaltender James Barr a tough time of it. Chase Kaiser, who has been a standout during this tough run of games for the franchise, would give the home team the lead on the 2 minute mark, from a power play goal as he would place his shot coolly passed R'men goalie James Barr; with assists from Hansen and Holland(it looked like Kevin Smith may have had the assist though). With both teams laying some good hits and not giving an inch, the crowd was certainly entertained in this high tempo first period. Hansen, Powell, Holland, Kaiser and Kevin Smith would keep the pressure on the Langley defenced while the Rivermen forwards, Puskarich and former Grizz power-forward Mike Tebbutt would keep Grizzles goalie Taylor Pears busy.
However, Langley would tie it up, after Jackson Playfair would beat Pears towards the end of the first. Langley could have taken the courtesy of Mike Tebbutt as he must be kicking himself, after a beauty of a pass from Puskarich across the face of the Grizzlies goal, was mishit by Tebbutt on an open Grizzlies net, after Pears had been left stranded from the initial pass.  A 1-1 scoreline at the end of the first.

2nd Period: Saw Langley star and playmaker, Austin Plevy give Langley a 2-1 lead after a nice pass from Sutcliffe. With both teams keeping up a torrid pace, the crowd felt goals would be on the menu tonight and the Grizzlies who were full of confidence, would level the game after a great shot from the skilled/nimble Myles Powell to make it 2-2. Kevin Smith, would also ring a powerful slap shot off of the Langley post and was unlucky not to score. In the last 10 minutes of the 2nd, neither side would back down, as Ben Grenier would score give Langley a 3-2 lead; only for the inform Coltyn Hansen to tie it up with his 18th goal of the season. 3-3 at the end of the 2nd.
However, on a sour note, Mark McLellan and Mitchell Smith would both leave the game in the first two periods with injuries.

3rd Period: Both teams would pepper each others net in the third, but it would be Cam Lawson to the rescue as he would send the Grizzlies faithful into ecstasy, scoring the game winning goal on the power play to make it a 4-3 scoreline. Lawson, who has been a real treat to watch all season, has shown he can be a real difference maker at this level and has stepped it up in key situations on multiple occasions in the 2011/12 season.
After the goal, things would boil over and Jaden Schmeisser who is never one to back down from a challenge, would duke it out with a couple of Rivermen; which during the fisticuffs would see Cam Lawson get jumped by a Langley player as well. Taylor Pears, would keep Langley at bay in the last few minutes as the Grizzlies would earn a character victory, to jump up to sixth place, ahead of both Alberni and Langley. The Grizzlies have played a few extra games, in what is looking like a three team battle to avoid the wooden spoon in the last 8 or so games left in the season.

Afterwards Lawson commented on centering the top line between Hansen and Kaiser, “It’s been good we have some good chemistry and it’s pretty easy for me to play with them and find them busting down the wing with their great speed. Hopefully we can keep it going. Lawson also talked about how nice it was to get a win at home, “It was great we have some very loyal fans and it was nice to win one for them here at home. The guys have all been staying positive and every single guy here is committed to getting better.

Game Thought Grizzlies: What a difference a couple of extra players make, as the Grizzlies competed all night against a Langley team who came to the Westshore looking for both points.
Kasier, Hansen and Lawson again showed what an asset they have been to the team this season and what they can and will be capable of next season.
Taylor Pears did everything necessary to ensure he stopped Langley and pulled off a number of key saves.
Solid on special teams tonight.
The boys themselves haven't been disheartened despite some of the scorelines in recent weeks and showed that they won't be intimidated or back down to any opponent; even if they are undermanned.

Game Thoughts Langley: Good effort from Langley tonight as they where given everything they could handle from a hardworking Grizzlies team. Langley is a young team and should be better equipped and stronger for next season. Players like Pellah, Chickin, Puskarich and Vlanich should make the Rivermen a force in the BCHL next season. From watching Langley a few times this season, the talent has been there, but, it looks like the coaching hasn't gotten it done.
Victoria leads the season series v's Langley 4 - 2 with one game left to play at Bear mtn, two weeks from now.

3 Stars of the game:
1st * Chase Kasier    2nd *Austin Plevy   3rd * Taylor Pears
Attendence: 907 (why not)   Shots on Goal : Grizzlies 36   Langley 38
Power plays: Grizzlies 2 for 7 and Langley 0 for 1

Three seasons of hard work and dedication has paid off for Dylan Nowakowski as the former Grizzlies favourite, who is now applying his trade with the AJHL's Brooks Bandits; has received a scholarship from the NCAA's University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves starting for the 2012/13 season.
Nowakowski, who has become well known in Junior A hockey circles as a hard working, skilled forward with good hands and a player who doesn't back down from a challenge.
Nowakowski, was traded from the Alberni Bulldgos to the Brooks Bandits at the Jnr A trade deadline has become a major part of the Bandits push to win the AJHL title.

Tony Burrows Interview with former Grizz and current Holy Cross star Matt Ginn

Tony Burrows interview with Matt Ginn:
OUR GRIZZLIES GOALTENDER LAST YEAR WAS MATT GINN. HE IS NOW PLAYING WITH HOLY CROSS IN LINDSAY ONTARIO IN THE ATLANTIC HOCKEY ASSOCIATION. MATT KINDLY AGREED TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS FOR ME IN A LITTLE INTERVIEW.

TONY- What do you find to be the biggest difference in playing at the BCHL level and then moving on to the AHA College Hockey level? I see that your save percentage this year is .901 Which is still just about what you were doing with the Grizzlies!

MATT- I think the biggest difference from the BCHL to the NCAA is the size and strength of the guys and the speed is quicker too so it took a bit of an adjustment period at first.

TONY-With practices, games, gym, team activities, how many hours a week would be hockey related?
MATT--It's tough to say how many hours a week are hockey related, but we have lifts, practises and games plus just time spent with the guys away from the rink .

TONY-Do you find it hard keeping up the academic work as well as your hockey?

MATT--It took a little getting used to with the school work, but you kind of get used to it so it's just important to stay on top of the work.

TONY-- Does your hockey schedule conflict with your academic schedule? How is it arranged for when you are away at games?

MATT- The professors are good with the schedules with games and when we have to travel so that's not a problem really at all.

TONY-Do University hockey teams bond and party together and play together and have the closeness of a BCHL team?

MATT-We are really close as a team which is good, have a great bunch of guys.

TONY--Where do you live? Are you by yourself or do you have a roomie?

MATT-- I live in a residence with a roommate from my team.

TONY--How many fans does College hockey draw to a game?

MATT--It depends on where the game is played and who is playing, but some teams like Wisconsin and North Dakota get over 10,000 fans at games.

TONY--How do Collegiate teams travel? Bus or air?
MATT--For the most part college teams take buses, unless you're playing across the country where you fly. We flew on one trip this year.

TONY-- Can the fans interact with, and get to know the players as they can in the BCHL?

MATT--The fans do interact with the guys on the team, I like getting to know the fans.

TONY---Is the team expected to do some PR work and go out in the community to functions to advertise the games and fund-raise for charity?
MATT-- We do some community involved activities and school activities.

TONY---Are you finding the time management required stressful or are you taking it in your stride?
MATT--. I think it just takes a little bit of getting used to figuring out your time management but once you get going I don't find it too tough.

TONY--What would you say has been the thing that has impressed you the most, either in hockey or just at the University since you started at Holy Cross?

MATT--The thing that has impressed me the most has been the following from the students at the school that come cheer us on at our games and are really supportive.

TONY--Are you still keeping in touch with some of the guys you played with on the Grizzlies team?

MATT-- I keep in touch with a bunch of the guys from the Grizzlies last year, it was a great year and I miss those guys.

TONY--Are there any special memories that you have from when you played for the Grizzlies last year?

MATT--I think the whole year was an awesome experience, we had a great group of guys both on and off the ice and it's too bad we came up a little short it's still tough to take that one.

TONY--What are you majoring in?

MATT-- I haven't declared a major yet.

TONY--Have you got any plans yet for when you graduate?

MATT--I'm hoping to play hockey professionally somewhere.

TONY--- If you could work anywhere after graduation where would you like to work if you do not continue on with hockey as a career?

MATT--if I didn't play hockey as a career I'd still like to be involved in the game somehow whether as a coach, or manager or something along those lines.

TONY---Do you have any burning desire to do any traveling (Thailand , Asia, Australia. Arabia or???) after you graduate or during Summer break?

MATT--I'm not really a big traveller.

Holy Cross University

TONY--Which NHL team do you cheer for?

MATT-- I cheer for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

TONY---Do you try to model yourself after any particular NHL goalie?

MATT--I wouldn't say I model my game after a certain NHL goalie, but my favourite one is Carey Price.

TONY-- After graduation are you hoping to get picked up by the NHL and continue with hockey or would you rather pursue your career in “civvie” life with the degree that you earn?

MATT-- It's obviously my dream to play in the NHL, but I'm hoping that I can play hockey professionally when I'm done school.

Powell River Kings 6-0 Victoria Grizzlies @ Hap Parker Arena, Sunday, Feb 19, 2012

(sorry little late on the report)

Two goals in each period was enough to see off the Grizzlies,2.5 forward lines in a 6-0 Powell River victory on Sunday afternoon.
With 14 skaters dressed it was always going to be a bit of an uphill battle and minus Mark McLellan, the Grizzlies could only muster 13 shots on the night. Matt Scarth with two goals and former Grizzlie Evan Richardson with two assists would see the Kings well on the way to victory.
A decent effort from golaie Nick Taylor, stopping 38 shots on 44 attempts kept the scoreline down.
The powerplay fizzled going 0 for 3 on the night as Victoria returned home empty handed after this two game series.

The Grizzlies return to Bear Mountain this Friday tot ake on the Langley Rivermen and then Saturday at home to the Nanaimo Clippers.

Powell River Kings 13 - 1 Victoria Grizzlies @ Hap Parker Arena, Feb 18th, 2012

The Grizzlies fourteen skaters would come off on the wrong end of a 13-1 defeat to the Powell River Kings, in the first game of a two game series in Powell River on Saturday night. Victoria, would welcome back Captain Kevin Smith and add the Campbell River Storm's, Latvian born forward Davis Sprukts to the ranks ,but, would still be undermanned against Kent Lewis's powerhouse Kings.
Little or no mercy would be shown as Powell River would pepper the Grizzlies net with 63 shots, Nick Taylor being in goal for 19 of them and Taylor Pears for 44.
The Kings would be 9-0 ahead until the lone Grizzlies marker came from Mark McLellan with assist from DeJong and Powell towards the end of the 2nd period.
Again, the terms "thin roster" and "undermanned", is the theme of the 2nd half of this Grizzlies season, but, credit to the guys who have always played Powell River hard, no matter the scores this season.
Hell, I've seen this Grizzlies squad put in a better effort against the Kings than the RBC cup team of 2008/09.
Anyhow, the two teams square off again this afternoon at 1:30pm. Hang in there Guys!!!!!

Jamie Benn bobblehead night in Dallas, Feb 16th

Success can be measured in many ways and although Jamie Benn hit the dizzy heights of playing in the NHL two seasons ago with the Dallas Stars, Bennie, has truly arrived in the world of hockey stardom by having his own "Jamie Benn bobblehead night" on Feb 16th v's the Calgary Flames.
The former Grizzlies forward and local boy, has excelled in his hockey career with the Stars at the NHL level and the lucky first 10,000 fans will receive a Jamie Benn bobblehead at the American Airlines Arena.

Congrats Jamie and enjoy the night!!!!

Here is the link (pretty funny) from the Dallas Stars website with the bobblehead night announcement.

Wentachee WA, BCHL team soon to be a reality!!!

A reversal by Hockey USA, to allow a franchise from Wenatchee WA to join the BCHL, has been approved after the application was originally rejected.
Wentachee, has seen great success on the ice and especially in attendance after current Jnr hockey team, the Wenatchee Wild have been playing in the NAHL; which is a Junior hockey league regarded as below Jnr A and above Jnr B standard, despite what the sales and marketing team of the NAHL might tell you( so kinda of a Jnr A- level).
Wenatchee's arena the "Town Toyota Arena" is  an excellent Junior hockey building which opened in 2008 with a capacity of 4300 for hockey. The NAHL's Wild, has averaged an impressive 2800-3200 in the last few years and a hockey enthusiastic market like Wenatchee, makes the BCHL a stronger league overnight.
The only issue at this time is the arena management/City of Wenatchee and finance, where there seems to be an issue of funding and stability.
Hopefully this can be resolved and we will seen a BCHL franchise in Wenatchee soon.

Roar Gossip

With recent injuries to Bilious, Mitchell Smith, Nolan DeJong and Kevin Smith, it looks like the Grizzlies maybe undermanned coming into this weekends series at Powell River.
Although it looks like Kevin's injury is a little more long term, hopefully Mitchell, Braxton and Nolan are recovering and making progress. I'm sure nobody is being rushed back and the players are getting the chance to recover properly.
I'm sure we'll see some developments with call up's and AP's soon, but, with the VIJHL playoff stretch run going thick and fast right now, some of the Jnr B teams maybe a little reluctant to see their players doing double duty at this point.

End of Season Announcements!!!!!

Look for announcement's from the Grizzlies regarding end of season activities and prizes coming up soon.

Game and Grizzlies thoughts since the trade deadline!!!

So we all know that the Grizzlies have a thin roster and have been icing 13-16 players for most games since the trade deadline about a month ago. The players who have remained with the club have been nothing short of outstanding for this team and given a great effort for the coaches and the Victoria fans.
Many players have stepped up and have shown their worth with more ice time, more responsibility and playing in different situations.
The team has quite often played sorely undermanned including playing 3 games in a row at times and despite a couple of blow outs, have come out to play and have given 110% in nearly every game.
A sense of unfortunate irony is that this team may yet finish bottom of the Coastal Conference. Since the trade deadline, in 12 games the Grizzlies have won 1, tied 1 and lost 10.

Reasons to celebrate since the trade deadline:

The win in Coquitlam on Friday, could be classified as one of the best in Grizzlies history. Against an inform Express team with a full line up of skaters in their own barn, the Grizzlies with 13 skaters and goalie Taylor Pears stopping 58 shots on 63 Express shots, was out of the this world. A hell of an effort and praise to all the boys.
On Jan 29th in Surrey, the Grizzlies took the 2nd placed Eagles to a 4-4 tie going into overtime as well as being the third game in three nights. Nick Taylor and the boys where outstanding receiving lots of credit from there opponents and cheered on the by the 7th man, the Grizzlies fans who came out in force and where louder than the Surrey faithful!!!!!!

Tougher moments since the trade deadline:

Although the effort has never been in question, seeing the team come out and play so short handed has been frustrating not only for the players, but, for the fans at times. As this is the reality of the situation and injuries to Myron, Walchuk, Rockafellow and Smith (maybe DeJong and Mitchell Smith out for a while as well) couldn't be helped, although playing this much ice time has been factor in these injuries.
Although the Grizzlies current situation this season, is all for the greater good of having the ability to bring in a potential powerhouse team, due to all the futures owed to the team around the Jnr A leagues in trades for next season; and also the younger players picking up a lot of experience from this season for next as well.
But, this team should never have been left with such a depleted roster(despite some injuries) for what remained of this season and the sole blame for this must be placed on Owner/Head Coach Len Barrie and GM Victor Gervais. In many junior hockey clubs the latter's head, may have already been on a platter. Again this is an unofficial blog!!!

On a Positive Note:

The feeling around the league, when the BCHL announced that only 4 teams would make the playoffs from each conference this season, was that any teams out of playoff contention by Xmas would just give up on the season and lose interest. This was voiced by many owners and coaches of teams around the league in August.
However, the Grizzlies are out of a playoff spot, but, never once has there heads gone down since the trade deadline and they have put in a effort that they can be proud of for the rest of the hockey careers.
This undermanned Grizzlies team has competed on every shift and every player and stepped up to put in a 110% effort. Thanks guys it means a lot to the fans!!!!

Just to add:

There really should be a collection bowl sent around the arena at the next Grizzlies home game and it should have Taylor Pears name on it.
Facing 123 shots and stopping 108 of them is nothing short of incredible. With the Grizzlies goalies being placed in these game situations.... a little danger pay should be fair enough!!!!!

Alberni Valley Bulldogs 10 - 3 Victoria Grizzlies @ Weyerhauser Arena, Feb 11, 2012

The Undermanned Grizzlies faced another barrage of up to 60 shots as they couldn't build on the recent success of the previous nights victory in Coquitlam.
Starting the game with only 13 skaters for the 2nd game in a row, fatigue would be a factor. Although the Grizzlies would come out of the gate in the first 7 minutes of the first period on fire. Two goals by Chase Kaiser, including one on the powerplay and a Mike Sandor goal would give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead. Credit to the boys for battling in that first period, but, the Dogs would come back to score 10 unanswered goals over the next two and half periods.
Credit to the Bulldogs who where only playing with 16 skaters in their line up as they went for the Grizzlies jugular and didn't let up. The Belarusian brothers Artisom and Yan Kalashinokiv would combine for 9 points on the night; along with 3 point nights for Tironese, Tyrone, Stand and Hyland would ensure the Alberni would climb up the standings and match the Grizzlies on points for the season with 39.
Taylor Pears, would face 60 shots stopping 50 of them. This moves the total workload in the last two game for Pears, to 123 shots where Taylor has stopped an incredible 108 of them.
To add to the Grizzlies roster woes, along with Capt Kevin Smith who will hopefully be back soon, the Grizzlies lost Nolan DeJong (rookie of the season in my mind) and the Grizzlies own Bulldog on the ice, forward Mitchell Smith. Victoria Grizzlies 6 Coquitlam Express 5 Feb 10, 2012

The 12 game winless slump is officially over. The Victoria Grizzlies used a four goal explosion in the second period to defeat the Coquitlam Express 6-5 on Friday night before a crowd of 1,015 in Coquitlam. Despite missing Kevin Smith, Jaden Schmeisser to injury and dressing only four defencemen and thirteen skaters in total and giving up a season high 63 shots the Grizzlies were able to emerge victorious thanks to the goaltending of Taylor Pears and some clutch sniping from an unexpected source in newcomer Mitchell Smith.

The Kaiser-Hansen-Lawson line continued to scorch Coquitlam after putting up five goals last Friday night in Victoria the line got the Grizz out to an early lead with some help from Stefan Gonzales who made a great cross-ice breakout pass from his own zone to spring a streaking Hansen who set-up up Kaiser for the first goal of the game. Express forward John Siemer equalized the game at one soon after and it stayed that way through 20 minutes. Early in the second period the Grizzlies found themselves in some trouble as Cole Gelley, Stefan Gonzales and then Braxton Bilous took consecutive minor penalties within a 33 second span. That left the Grizzlies facing a long 5 on 3 penalty kill with Nolan De Jong as the only defenceman available. Remarkably the Grizz bent but did not break as they only surrendered one power play goal on what could have been a turning point in the game. The Grizz would fight back though as shortly after the penalties expired Mitchell Smith banged home his first BCHL goal to tie it at two. After Siemer scored again to make it 3-2 the Grizz went to work, much like last Friday in Victoria where they scored 3 goals in the last 4:01 of the second period, this game the Grizz scored 3 goals in the last 6:23 of the second period to take a 5-3 lead after 40 minutes. Alex Holland, Coltyn Hansen and Mitchell Smith scored the late goals for the Grizzlies. Coquitlam came out firing everything at the net in the third but aside from a goal 1:22 into the period by Brady Shaw and a goal with just 8 seconds left Taylor Pears was up to the challenge as he turned aside 27 third period shots. Alex Holland scored what turned out to be the game winner with 1:20 to go in the game to give the Grizz some breathing room as he was sprung free by the defence tandem of Bilous and De Jong.
Grizzlies game thoughts: What can be said only 13 skaters and still able to beat a playoff bound team. Gutsy effort by everyone, Taylor Pears was absolutely incredible with 58 saves. Congratulations Great timing by Mitchell Smith for his first two BCHL goals, congratulations. Alex Holland with 2 goals and an assist played a strong game. The top line of Hansen-Kaiser-Lawson continued their strong play with goals by Hansen and Kaiser. The 4 defencemen played well and chipped in offensively with assists by Braxton Bilous and Stefan Gonzales. Both also played a good physical game with Bilous using a Keith Ballard like hip-check to send Express star Brady Shaw flying. Nolan De Jong chipped in 3 assists and logged a ton of ice-time as the only defenceman not penalized in the game.

Powell River Kings 2 Victoria Grizzlies 1 Feb 4, 2012 Bear Mountain Arena

Saturday night against the Kings was the Taylor Pears show for the Victoria Grizzlies as the 20 year old goaltender made 52 saves in a 2-1 loss to the Coastal Conference leading Powell River Kings. The Grizzlies took an early 1-0 lead on a strange goal by Coltyn Hansen who took a high floating shot from the blueline that beat a screened Kings goalie Jonas Imoo who clearly didn’t see the puck as he didn’t react until it was already by him. Chase Kaiser and Cam Lawson drew assists on the goal as that line continued its red-hot weekend. The Kings controlled the play in the first two periods and showed why they’re in first place but Taylor Pears was locked in and the only King player able to beat him was former Grizz Evan Richardson who made a nice move to get by a Grizz defender and made a deke on Pears before roofing a backhand high under the crossbar. The second period ended in a 1-1 tie with the Kings outshooting the Grizzlies 41-15, the Grizzlies were again down to 4 defencemen after captain Kevin Smith suffered a shoulder injury in the first and left the game, with Jaden Schmeisser out after getting hurt Friday night it was up to Nolan De Jong, Braxton Bilous, Stefan Gonzales and Cole Gelley to deal with the big Kings forwards. The Kings scored the eventual game winner 5 minutes into the third as Richardson set up Cohen Adair, the Grizzlies would threaten in the last half of the third period especially Myles Powell who was the most dangerous Grizz attacker on the evening and had a few good chances to tie the game but was thwarted by Imoo.

Grizzlies Game Thoughts:
Another spirited effort by the undermanned Grizzlies and a terrific performance by well deserved first star Taylor Pears. Myles Powell played a good game not afraid to take the puck hard to the Kings net against a big Kings defence. Mike Sandor admirably filled in for a few shifts on the back end to give the remaining four defencemen a breather after Kevin Smith’s injury.

Coquitlam Expess 8 Victoria Grizzlies 5 Feb 3,2012 at Bear Mountain Arena

The Victoria Grizzlies welcomed the Coquitlam Express to the Bear Mountain Arena on Friday night and the two clubs engaged in a very entertaining hockey game. The Express jumped out to an early lead but the Grizzlies fought back with goals from Cam Lawson and the red-hot Coltyn Hansen to send the game to the first intermission tied at two apiece. The second period was a tale of two halves with the Express dominating the first 10 minutes and racking up 3 goals from Kunnas, Hodder and Siemer to take a 5-2 lead. The second half of the period was all Grizzlies and more specifically all about the C3 line, Cam, Chase and Coltyn made their mark as a line scoring 3 goals (including 2 by Lawson to complete his hat trick) in the last 4:01 of the period to tie the game at 5 after two periods. The line finished with 14 points for the night as Hansen and Kaiser each had 1 goal and 4 assists and Lawson had 3 goals and 1 assist.
The third period was marred by some questionable officiating as Coquitlam scored an early goal to take a 6-5 lead. The Grizzlies then received a bench minor from referee Poole for arguing a close offside call and Coquitlam took full advantage of the power play to make it a two goal lead. After the goal Poole then compounded things for the Grizzlies by giving Cam Lawson a 10 minute misconduct for continuing to chirp about the offside call. Coquitlam scored again 30 seconds later and after the goal Poole tossed Lawson from the game while Lawson was sitting in the penalty box. The Express and goalie Cole Huggins then shut the door on the deflated Grizzlies to claim an 8-5 victory.

Grizzlies Game Thoughts: The C3 line of Lawson, Kaiser and Hansen was dominant in the Express zone and controlled play with their speed and skill while they were on the ice bringing back memories for Grizz fans of the Myron, Murphy and Moran line. The defense suffered another injury as Jaden Schmeisser left the game with an injury in the first period and didn’t return. The remaining defenders, Kevin Smith, Stefan Gonzales, Nolan De Jong, Braxton Bilous and newly signed Cole Gelley played well in limiting Coquitlam to 35 shots. Bilous played a strong two-way game and was also the only other Grizz to get a point with his assist.

Officials Game Thoughts:

It was a very entertaining back and forth game for 2 plus periods and it would have been nice to see the players settle it on the ice. Referee Carl Poole gave the Grizzlies a bench minor 6:30 into the third period for arguing a close offside call that would have given them an odd-man rush and then gave Cam Lawson who already had a hat trick a misconduct. Now I don’t know what was said and while I don’t believe that referees should have to put up with verbal abuse I also don’t like to see a bench minor and a misconduct to a first line player given in the third period of a one goal game for something that didn’t involve throwing items on the ice or showing up the officials in any visible way. You would never see a bench minor given like that in an NHL game, ideally in that situation the ref would not have “rabbit ears” let the team vent and then skate to the other side of the ice and let the players decide the game. While the Grizzlies playoff chances are finished and won’t be affected by the calls I have to think that Nanaimo, Surrey and Cowichan who are battling the Express for playoff seeds weren’t to happy to see those penalties given.

Grizzlies get some help on Defence

In a roster numbers game which has been very much against the Grizzlies since the trade deadline, the Grizzlies where given permission to sign BCHL veteran defenceman, 21 yr old Cole Gelley.
Over the last 7/8 games the Grizzlies have at times played with just 15 skaters, Cole's addition to the roster gives the grizzlies another Jnr A seasoned veteran at the back.
Galley, who played 3 seasons with the Surrey Eagles and last year with Coquiltam hasn't played in the BCHL this season.
With over 137 games BCHL games under his belt and 40 points, Gelley experience will be a welcomed addition to the Grizzlies line up. Having watched Cole a few times over the last few years, he is a steady, good puck moving defencmen.
Welcome to the Grizzlies Cole!!!
