Victoria Grizzlies 3 - 2 Alberni Valley Bulldogs(OT), Oct 14th, 2012

For the second game in a row, OT heroics would seal the points for the black and gold. The Grizzlies, where really put to the test throughout this contest and credit the Bulldogs, who where playing there third game in three nights put in a great effort.
Michael Stiliadis, came up big for the home side stopping a number of Bulldog chances in the first two periods, but, was powerless to stop the Dogs going 2-0 ahead through two periods thanks to forwards Ryan Lough and a great unassisted effort from Chris Tracy.
The third period would see the Grizzlies start to get more of a grip on the game with the Fitzgerald's putting some nice shifts together and some great support via Jones and DeJong from the back offensively. Myles Fitzgerald, would start the comeback with a goal 3 minutes into the third period and the crowd would come to their feet as Leo, would score from a nice cross ice pass on the PP tying it up with 5 minutes to go in the period, sending it into the OT.

In the first minute, Myles Powell would keep his good start to the season going scoring a key goal 4 on 4, with helpers from Gerry and DJ for a successful weekend and 4 points.

Sorry for the limited game report, work commitments and technology where against me this week.

We'll have a look at the Trail game tomorrow and a look at the progress on Grizzlies from yesteryear as well.

Victoria Grizzlies v's Alberni Valley Bulldogs @ Bear Mountain Arena, 1:30pm, Oct 14th

Despite a tough 5-0 loss at home to the Clippers last night, the Bulldogs are still tied with your Grizzlies for top spot in the Island Division. Although the Grizzlies have a game in hand, this afternoon's game is a perfect chance to make that game count by taking both points at home against the Dogs.
In what some around the league have said, that Alberni are punching above their weight class right now, Head Coach Kevin Willson has a nice blend of returning players, youth and a few nice additions for the 2012/13 season
The Dogs seem to have no problem scoring, it's just keeping the puck out of the net so far this season.
With players like Hepso, Lough Craft and Tironese, it should be a challenge for the Grizz rear guard to keep these inform forwards at bay for three periods..
With three quality younger defenseman in Poppoff, Wilson and Gosselin the Bulldogs should be a have something  to build from at the back and goalie Jay Deo, is a capable Jnr A goalie.

This should be a great opportunity for the Grizzlies to capitalise on their good start to the season and coming off that excellent win against the Vees, taking that energy and enthusiasm into today's game shouldn't be an issue.
Fridays game was simply fantastic. End to end action for three periods right through to double OT, was a treat for Grizz, Vees and neutral fans alike.
I haven't seen that quality and effort in a Grizzlies team since the 06/07 Rylan Ferster led Grizzlies.

Attracting over 1300 fans with a Royals game, Rugby Union International tourney at Westhills Stadium and the baseball playoffs, is a credit to the sale and marketing team with family night being a big success. But, the product on the ice, is well worth coming out to see.

So, thirsting for more see you at 1:30pm to cheers on your Victoria Grizzlies!!!!

The Grizzlies lead the season series 1-0 thanks to that OT victory over the Dogs at the Showcase.

Victoria Grizzlies 3 - 2 Penticton Vees (Double OT) @ Bear Mountain Arena, Oct 12th, 2012

In front of a boisterous crowd of 1,300, the Grizzlies and Vees turned in a fantastic effort in a highly entertaining game on Friday night. Fans were treated to a high tempo match which was end to end all night, as the Grizzlies matched the number two ranked Junior A team in the country, in the Penticton Vees on every shift and every inch of the ice.

A great atmosphere and a great advertisement for what Grizzlies hockey is all about these days and anyone new to the organization/level of hockey that were in attendance, should be thirsting for more.

A nice touch was having the players, Mom’s and billet Moms wearing their sons jersey and receiving a rose from the players.

1st Period – The game took off like a shot with the Grizz and Vees setting a furious pace with both teams exchanging chances and some nice hits along on the way. In a first period which saw some great hockey, ensuring that both goalies had to look sharp early on.

It would be the Grizzlies who would take the lead as dogged determination from Chase Kaiser would cause him to force a Vees defenseman into a turnover, which he picked up putting a nice shot on Vees goalie Katuner who could only direct it into the path of Myles Powell. Powell,  would drive towards the net and beat Katuner for a 1-0, good guys lead after 12 minutes. Kaiser and Nicholishen would get the assists.

The Vees who came as advertised where skilled, determined and well organized and would capitalize just a minute after the Grizzlies goal on a rare DeJong turnover, after he had trouble controlling a pass on a Grizzlies PP. Nolan, would be disposed by the impressive Mike Rebry, who would score a short-handed goal unassisted, after going five hole on Brady Rouleau. 1-1.

The action would continue to go from end to end as on the same powerplay, Blake Thompson who skated hard all night, would pick up on a rebound from shot he had just taken and hammered his second shot by the Vees goalie, leaving Katuner helpless for an unassisted Grizzlies goal to make it 2-1.

The Vees would start to stretch the Grizzlies before the end of the first and would get the equalizing goal in the last minute; as that man Wade Murphy would fire a pin point shot into the roof of the net to tie things up at 2-2 at the end of the second.

2nd/3rd Period – High octane, with both teams creating chances and the Vees and Grizz defensive not giving an inch. Credit to Rouleau and Katuner who would pull off a few nice saves a piece to keep it all squared

It would be like a tennis game with the way both sets of players would go on the attack tonight in the last two periods.

Credit to Myles Powell and the Vees Travis Blanliel, who would drop the gloves and exchanged a few nice shots, which would really give there teammates and crowd an extra spark in the second. Chalk this one down to a draw.

The line of Lawson, Mazurek and Nicholishen certainly couldn’t match there Vees counterparts for speed, but, with their size and mobility for being power forwards, really kept the Penticton forwards contained and shut them down when they came out for a shift . Having a shut down line like this, that will start to put up points and can play some hockey, should really prove to give BCHL teams some real headaches this season.
Gerry Fitzgerald face off wins, would be key throughout the 3rd frame.

Credit to Myles Fitzgerald, who for me would lay on the hit of the game, pasting Wade Murphy up against the boards towards the end of the third.

After three excellent period of hockey, it would end 2-2 at the end of regulation.

OT (first) – The Grizzlies had a golden chance to finish the Vees off in the first OT period, but, couldn’t make the PP count. An excellent PK from the Vees would ensure the game would go into the second OT, with the crowd getting right behind the home side.

OT(double) – Cue the hero Brady Rouleau, as hearts would be in mouths after a penalty was called against the Grizzlies for a trip on Mellor. In double OT, any penalty is an automatic penalty shot and Rouleau would stand firm and pull off a great stop to keep the Grizzlies alive. The momentum swung back in the favour of the home side, as Myles Fitzgerald got the breakaway and sped into the Vees zone. Myles, circled the net and finished off a clinical move beating Katunar at his near post, with the OT winner for an incredible win to end an incredible game.

Game thoughts Victoria – They matched the Vees pound for pound as it was a treat to watch two well coached teams, who battled and put on a superb display on for the 1,300 in attendance. The Grizzlies would turn in a pure team effort and the hustle, energy and skill level was simply a treat to watch.

The Nicholishen, Mazurek and Lawson line was a big factor in keeping the Vees forwards from doing further damage with their size and fore checking.

Mitch Meek, had a lot more ice time tonight and deserved it, seeing more time on special teams including the OT periods. Meek, at 16 has really turned some heads with his smart hockey sense and awareness on the ice.

Myles Powell and Garrett Skrbich , worked there socks off tonight and it has been interesting to watch there game grow and develop so far this season.

Having an experienced goalie like Brady Rouleau, who is confident and calm under pressure, was a difference maker tonight against the league’s top scoring team.

The Fitzgerald’s; consistent, dangerous and one of the most effective line in the BCHL at this time.

All in all, credit to every Grizzlie tonight who battled and showed the competitiveness and quality of this team against an opponent like Penticton. Great character win tonight.

Game Thoughts Penticton – Fast, skilled, few mistakes and a well-coached Fred Harbinson team, who knew they were in a battle against Bill Bestwick’s team tonight. The Vees, have a lot scoring, a well run defense and lots of depth which makes them one of the teams to beat this season. Along with Murphy, Mellor, McClure, Rebry and Nenne, this is a team that boasts some of the best point producers in the league. A treat to watch.

Attendance – 1323     Shots on Goal – Grizzlies 34 and Vees 43

Power plays – Grizzlies 1 for 3 and Vees 0 for 1

Three Stars of the Games:   * Myles Fitzgerald  ** Brady Rouleau   *** Wade Murphy (Credit to Murph for coming out to acknowledge the crowd)

Keeping tabs on former Grizzlies

Sam Grist - Former Grizzlie and local boy, Sam Grist was traded this week from the Tri-City Americans to the WHL powerhouse Kamloops Blazers. The Blazers, should present Sam with a great opportunity to further his Major Junior career with Guy Charon's team, who are hotly tipped to win the WHL crown this season. Grist, are big bodied D-man played one season with the Grizzlies, is a force on the blue line, who played in 45 games during the 2009/10 season.

Sam Grist

Justin Courtnell - Since finishing up an impressive three years at Boston University, Justin was picked up by the Providence Bruins, the AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins.

Justin, didn't quite stick in Providence at this point, but, will get a chance to show what he can do in the pro ranks with the Bruins ECHL affiliate the South Carolina Stingrays.
Courtnell, a former 7th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightening,  appeared in over 120 regular season games as a Grizzlies amassing 114 points.

Victoria Grizzlies v Penticton Vees - 7:15pm, Friday, Oct 12th @ Bear Mountain Arena

Grizzlies Family Night

Wade Murphy’s, league leading Penticton Vees come into the Grizzlies den on Friday night, sporting the BCHL’s best record with 9 wins and only 1 loss on the season so far. The reigning RBC Champs appear to have started where they left off last season , even after losing some key players from that RBC cup winning team.
Gone are Joey Benik, the three Reilly brothers, Steve Fogarty and Travis St.Denis. But, in come BCHL vet Sam Mellor(former Trail player) who decommited from Alaska-Anchorage for another Junior A stint with Fred Harbinson’s Vees. Add the impressive Ontario import Micheal Rebry and of course, Murph. The Vees are a dangerous a proposition once more and with one of the most highly regarded Junior A programs in North America, they continue to be the class of the league. Penticton boasts two familiar faces to Victoria junior hockey fans and I’m sure will have a strong local support in, Vees goalies Chad Katuner and Nic Renyard. Two impressive young goaltenders, both from Victoria who are forming the backbone of the Vees title defence.

Now, with the Vees another stacked roster, this will prove to be quite the test for the Grizzlies who have hit a slight bump in the road from recent results.
Now are the Vees invincible? Quick answer to that, No!

During the showcase credit to Pentiction, they defeated both the Vernon Vipers and the Chiefs, but, where outplayed at times and where lucky to bag both victories. This isn’t to take anything away from the Vees, who did well to grind out the wins, but, you feel this year’s version in Penticton isn’t quite the offensive juggernaut that the 2011/12 side where.
However, former Vee and the centre piece of the Murphy trade coming back to the Grizzlies, is our captain Zach Urban. Zach, I’m sure will need no motivation to put one over on his old mates and show Fred Harbinson’s team that the Grizzlies are a force to be reckoned again in the Bill Bestwick era.  Urban ,who really looks to have settled into the team in the last few games, is a presence on the ice with his size and the team really looks to Urban for that leadership.

The Grizzlies have had a positive start to the season and with DJ Jones and Nolan DeJong in good form, which gives the Grizzlies a potent threat from the back to help the forwards every time. With secondary scoring starting to come around, the Rouleau/Stiliadis tandem solid after ten games and the triplets continuing there good form; the Grizzlies will give Penticton all they can handle.
The black and gold still lead the Island division tied with Alberni on thirteen points.

The Grizzlies should welcome Justin Coachman and David Mazurak back from suspension and they may be a debut for recently acquired defenseman, Chris Albertini from Ontario.
At this time, forward Reid Jackman has left the team under suspension and is awaiting a trade.

So what you waiting for, it’s family night , great deals to be head and two of the best Junior A teams in the country battling it on Friday night. Murph’s back in town and this should be one of the toughest tests for your Victoria Grizzlies this season.
