Ex Grizz Teal Burns traded from Vancouver Giants to P.A Raiders

Part of the famous 'kidline' from a couple of years along side Maddy Dias and Dustin Mowrey, Teal Burns has had his WHL rights traded from the Vancouver Giants to the Prince Albert Raiders today.
The 19 year old Victoria native Burns, in two seasons with the Grizz played 44 games scoring 6 goals and 8 assists before a trade to Nanaimo early in the part of the 2009/10 season.
Teal, would go on to play for the Clippers before WHL stints with the Portland Winterhawks, Giants and now the Prince Albert Raiders.
One thing I liked about Burns when he played in a Victoria uniform, was his skill , saw the ice well and he didn't mind dropping the gloves when needed.

Jarryd Ten Vaanholt - BCHL player of the week

Congrats to forward Jarryd Ten Vaanholt on becoming the BCHL player of the week.

Victoria Grizzlies forward Jarryd Ten Vaanholt has been named the British Columbia Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16, the league announced Monday.

Ten Vaanholt led the Grizzlies in a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the Nanaimo Clippers with two goals and two assists in the third period to begin the week. He repeated as 1st Star with two goals and a helper in a win over Langley, and finished with a goal, two assists and a 3rd Star in another win over Nanaimo.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound West Vancouver native wound up with five goals and six assists in four games and is now on a personal eight-game point streak.

Honourable mentions this week go to Prince George Spruce Kings forward Michael Colantone (three games, two goals, eight assists, three 2nd Stars), Coquitlam Express goalie Khaleed Devji (one tie in relief, one win, 85 saves on 88 shots, 1.76 GAA, one 1st Star, one 2nd Star), Prince George Spruce Kings defenceman Ben Woodley (three games, one goal, three assists) and Prince George Spruce Kings forward Jujhar Khaira (three games, six goals, four assists, one 1st Star, one 2nd Star).

Clippers 4-5 Grizzlies @ Frank Crane Arena - Oct 16 at 3pm

So the sixth game of the season between these two teams, lived up to the usual 3rd period, heart stopping finishes to the games we've seen in this series so far. It also went to show once again, if your leading by 5 or 6 goals going into the third period, you can't take that lead for granted.

1st Period: The first period started off nicely for the Grizzlies, with the inform Victoria first line of Myron, Ten Vaanholt and Murphy scoring a goal each; with all three coming on the PP.

Coltyn Hansen who has looked very good on this road trip, netted his first goal and the ever dangerous Taylor Pernerowski, boosting his points tally for the season to six points adding another. Five first period goals would give Victoria a commanding lead .

Despite the hectic schedule of the last few days the Grizzlies didn't seemed phased. With the Clippers running into penalty trouble in the first, Nanaimo just didnt get out of the starting gate.

Craig Eiserman was pulled in favour of Billy Faust towards the end of the first for Nanaimo.

Garrett Rockafellow was making his first start in two weeks for the Grizzlies

2nd Period: The 2nd period started with Victoria running a foul of referee Carl Poole with the Grizzlies seeing the penalty box on five occasions through the 2nd period. Rockafellow and the penalty killers would weather the storm, but, where unable to stop D-man David Iacono scoring Nanaimo's first to make it 5-1 on the 3 minute mark. Garrett Rockafellow, after the first two periods would allow just one Clipper goal on 21 shots. Billy Faust, seemed to have steadied things in net for Nanaimo as the Grizzlies couldn't capatalize on thier first period lead.

3rd Period: The Clippers, I'm sure who had been through a tongue lashing from coach Mike Vandekamp, came at the Grizzlies with avengence in the third. Josh Phillips scored on the PP beating Rockafellow, due to Taylor Pernerowski penalty (after a solid game thus far), was given a game misconduct for a hit to the head on a Clippers (Gladiuk, I could be wrong) player. The Clippers would pile the pressure on a fatigued Victoria squad and on the 15 mintue mark; would score back to back goals from McCormack and Gladiuk to make the game a heart pounding 5-4 advantage in the Grizzlies favour. Rockafellow and Victoria would hang on the in last 5 mintues for an important Victoira win on the road.

After game thoughts: With this victory the Grizzlies went 2 for 3 on the roadtrip and where unlucky not to have gone undeafted this weekend.

The team is gelling and although this one turned into an ugly win at the end, they all count as the Grizzlies go to 4 wins and 6 losses through 10 games on the season.

For the Clippers, after the loss to Victoria last Weds night, CoachVandeKamp has threatened on the radio to shake his squads personel a little bit. Should be an interesting few days in Clipperville.

Surrey 5-4 Grizzlies @South Surrey Events Centre - October 15

In what came across as an ill tempered affair, the Grizzlies hit a bump in the road going down to the Eagles 5-4 on the road. Two shorthanded goal by Surrey vets Morley and Lindeross looked to have taken the points from what sounded like a pretty even game for the most part.

Jamie Tucker had 5 goals against him on 38 shots while Surrey's goalie Andrew Hunt had 4 against on 33.

The topline of Myron, Ten Vaanholt and Murphy had 6 pts on the night with 2 goals from Murph and a goal each from Pernerowski and a first for Chase Kaiser in Grizzlies colours rounded out Victoria's goal tally.

Even in defeat the Grizzlies looked like they competed well and kept it close. I'm sure the team and coaching staff are kicking themsleves after the two mental lapses on short handed goals,sees the Grizzlies still have to work on some areas,but, they improving in others.

The Grizzlies round out the 3 game road trip in Nanaimo, tomorrow afternoon at 3pm verses those Clippers...YET AGAIN. I'm sorry, I'm one of those bitchy fans that dislikes the schedule of not seeing all the BCHL teams in a season and then playing our Island rivals 10-12 times!!!

 

                                                

Nick Pappas now with the Saanich Braves

Scottsdale, AZ native and 19 year old forward Nick Pappas has been sent to the Saanich Braves of the VIJHL. Pappas is still listed as an AP with the club and can play up to 10 games for our club, before the Grizzlies must decide to sign him to a card or not.
Potentially a victim of the numbers game at the forward positon, playing regular hockey and getting a lot more ice time should help Pappas and his game under the guidence of the well respected Braves Head Coach, Brad Cook.
Pappas has all the tools to play Junior A hockey, with speed, quick hands and good skating ability, I could see Pappas being back up soon enough.

Langley 1-5 Grizzlies @Langley Events Centre - Oct 14,2011

If you jumped off the bandwagon after 5 games, you better flag down a ride from the big hairy Grizz wagon. The Grizzlies won there third in a row and a well rounded performance through 3 periods of hockey, reflected that on the scoresheet tonight.
Jamie Tucker, backstopped the team tonight, allowng one goal on 29 shots and at the other end of the ice it was the first line who continued to dominate with 7 points via Ten Vaanholt, Myron and Murph. But, take nothing away from Moran and Godinho who chipped in with a couple of points each looking good on the 2nd line. Also, congrats to Nolan de Jong on his first BCHL goal.
From Scotty Didmon's radio broadcast the whole team, sounded like they worked hard and with grinders like Renner, Lawson, Hansen,Kasier, Sandor, Holland and the defence starting to look a little more settled, this all translated into the Grizzlies most impressive win of the season to date.
With Langley just coming off a victory against the previously undefeated Powell River Kings, the Grizz had to look sharp away from home to pick up these much needed points.
Credit to the team, who look to be rebounding on the season after a tough start and the pieces look like there starting to fit into place.

Another shout out goes to Garrett Kemmler. The 16 yr old AP, who was one of the last cuts at camp has looked really good in his first two starts with the Grizzlies. While at 5'7'' for a D-man, he is no Zedeno Chara, but, he moves puck well, jumps up in the play and doesn't back down from guys who are a couple of years older and about 30 pounds heavier.
I can't wait to see what guys like Kemmler, De Jong and Walchuk will be capable of at this level in the near future.

In the useless information stat department, we can count  round 1 to the Grizzlies in the first clash between these two clubs in franchise history(technically). The Riverman, where formally the Langley Chiefs(now Chilliwack) and where bought by lower mainland hockey guru, Roy Henderson and reinvented as the Rivermen. Snappy logo and jerseys!!!
