Wade Murphy leading the Vees charge + Victoria goalies in Vees uni's

With a two game lead on the Brooks Bandits in the 2012 Doyle Cup, the Penticton Vees are making good on their promise of taking their juggernaut team into Humboldt and the RBC Cup.
After beating the AJHL champs, the Brooks Bandits in both games in Brooks, the Vees have Wade Murphy to thank, as his lone goal would prove be the winner in a 1-0 victory over the Bandits in game 2.
With the reminder of the series now in Penticton, you have to suspect that Dylan Nowarkowski's Brooks Bandits, are in for a bit of an uphill climb.

Wade Murphy

So, if your Fred Harbinson and the Vees, you don't need to look any further than Victoria for a goaltender. Ok, so they traded for Michael Garteig from the Grizzlies at the start of the season, recruited Victoria boy Chad Kautner as his back up and as insurance for the two starters they added Victoria born goalies Nick Babich (Campbell River Storm) and Nik Reynard(South Island Thunderbirds) as insurance during this Doyle Cup and hopefully RBC Cup run.

The Local Goalies

Nic Reynard
Chad Kautner

Nick Babich

Congrats to local boys Chad, Nic, Nick along with Wade Murphy and Nick Buchanan who are all flying the Island banner in the Vees line up this season.

The PIJHL Abbotsford Pilots are the Keystone Cup Champs

What a two weeks for the Junior B Abbotsford Pilots. After winning the Cyclone Taylor Cup (BC Jnr B, Championship), the Pilots went on to capture the Western Jnr B championship(Keystone Cup) after defeating the Thunder Bay Northern Hawks in the final, in Sasakatoon.

Brett Kolins

Led by Brett Kolins, the Pilots won 4 and lost just 1 in the round robin play and then proceded to hammer Thunder Bay in the final 9-1.

With the cream of the Junior B crop competing in this years Keystone, teams from Whitecourt - Alberta, Thunder Bay - Northern Ont, Arborg - Manitoba, Pilot Bute Storm - Saskatchewan and the host Saskatoon Royals, the Pilots did themselves and their community proud.

Congratulations to Brett and the Pilots and what a feather in the cap to the Pilots, PIJHL and Junior B hockey in BC.

Jarryd Ten Vaanholt to Elmira Collage

Congratulations to former Grizz Jarryd Ten Vaanholt, who has accepted a scholarship to Elmira University for the 2012/13 season.
In stints with Salmon Arm, Vernon, Victoria and Prince Geroge, Jarryd showed what a prolific scorer he was at the Junior A level.
With Victoria and Prince George this season Jarryd totalled an impressive tally in 61 games with 31 goals and 36 assists.
Ten Vaanholt, brought a lot to the Grizzlies offence this season and was a key part in the Prince George push into the playoffs this season.
In Elmira, Jarryd will be teaming up with another ex-Grizzlie and local boy Mike Collins.

Good luck in the NCAA Jarryd and thanks for your efforts in a Grizzlies uniform.

Cyclone Taylor Cup Final and Cowichan Valley Trade Report

The Victoria Cougars came so close, in fact double OT close, to lifting the Cyclone Taylor Cup in Abbotsford. However, it was not to be as the host team Abbotsford Piltos, led by captain and former Grizzlies Bret Kolins would send the local fans into a frenzy with scoring in the second OT period. Garret Lynum, would score to brake the hearts of Mark Van Helvoirt team as they left with a very respectable silver medal capping off a great 2011/12 season for the Esquimalt outfit.
With victories over the Pilots in the first round robin game and then defeating the KIJHL champs, the Beaver Valley Nighthawks, the Cougars put on a great show and really promoted the level and standard of the VIJHL.
Well done Cougars and heck of an effort.
The Pilots will now go onto the Western national Junior B championship known as the Keystone Cup, which is held this year in Saskatoon.

Brett Kolins

Good luck to Brett and the Pilots as they now carry the BC Junior B banner.

Recently reported on eliteprospects.com, the Cowichan Valley Captials have traded away two of their top players in forward Brandon Mistal and defender Brayden Sherbinin to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Unknown at this point is weather this is part of a futures trade or a trade that players going back to the Caps are still to be announced. Whatever the details, those are two quality Junior A players Salmon Arm have acquired, including Mistal being a former Salmon Arm Silverback himself.

Also on the Salmon Arm front, highly regarded Junior Coach, Troy Mick has returned to the S'back as Head Coach/GM. In what was an up/down season in the Shuswap last season, it is hoped Mick can turn the Silverbacks back into contenders in the Interior Division.

Doyle Cup all set to go

The battle ground for the Doyle Cup is set as the BCHL champion Penticton Vees, will take on the newly crowned AJHL champs the Brooks Bandits. In there 12 years in existence this is the first time Bandits have won the AJHL and should ask a lot of questions of the powerhouse Vees.
The Vees arsenal of the Reilly brothers, Lucia, Fogerty, Murphy, Gervias, Benik, St.Denis and between the pipes they have Kautner who has filled in nicely for the injured Garteig will be going into this series as favorites.
But, for Penticton to look beyond the Bandits and onto the RBC cup in Humboldt would be an unwise move indeed.

Brooks, has two potent lines that not only include former Grizzlie favorite Dylan Nowarkowski, they gave experienced attacking forwards in the like of 99pt man Matt Wilkins as well as experienced snipers in Cam Maclise, Reed Linaker, Mark Reners as well as goalie Jan Obernesser who finished 48 games with a 2.07 goals against average.
With Brooks earning 100 regular season points and finishing first in the AJHL's South Division, we should have ourselves one heck of a series.

The Doyle Cup is set for the following dates:

                 Date                            Home                         Away

Game 1               Fri, Apr 20             Brooks                     Penticton
Game 2               Sat, Apr 21             Brooks                    Penticton
*(If the first two games are split)
*Game 3             Sun, Apr 22           Brooks                    Penticton
*(If the first two games are swept)
*Game 3             Tue, April 24         Penticton                  Brooks
Game 4              Weds, April 25       Penticton                  Brooks

Game 5 - 7 if they are neccesary, dates to be arranged.

Cyclone Taylor Cup 2012/13

The Junior B, BC Provincial Championship otherwise known as the Cyclone Taylor Cup is underway in Abbotsford BC, with the first round robin games in the books tonight.
In round robin action, the VIJHL champion, Victoria Cougars would beat the host team Abbotsford Pilots 3-2. After going down 2-0 half way through the 2nd period, Chris Bannister would come up big scoring a hatrick to give the Cougars a 3-2 victory.
In the other day 1 round robin game, the KIJHL champs Beaver Valley Nighthawks would tie the PIJHL champs, the Delta IceHawks 1-1 going into day 2 of the round robin tomorrow.

Chilliwack announced as the venue for the 2012/13 BCHL showcase

THE CHILLIWACK CHIEFS PROSPERA PLACE

Chilliwack has been choosen to hold the BCHL showcase for the 2012/13 season. I'm booking my time from work as we speak:)

Please see the BCHL press release below:

April 12, 2012

For immediate release:

The British Columbia Hockey League is pleased to announce the Chilliwack Chiefs as the host franchise of the first-ever BCHL Showcase event, happening Sept. 7, 8 and 9 at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack.

The Showcase will bring all 16 BCHL teams to the Chiefs home rink for two games apiece that will count in the regular season standings. Similar events are held in other Junior A leagues and have proven effective at attracting interest from professional and college scouts which creates maximum exposure for players.

"Showcase events such as this are staged by other Leagues in North America and have proven to be hugely successful," said BCHL commissioner John Grisdale, "We are extremely pleased that Chilliwack and the Chiefs will host our first one."

The Chiefs rejoined the BCHL for the 2011-12 season after the Quesnel Millionaires franchise was purchased and relocated to the Fraser Valley. The Chiefs were welcomed back to the community and the club had some of the best attendance figures in the league.

"The support we saw in Chilliwack this past season was phenomenal," said Grisdale. "Fan interest is a major reason we’re excited about the Chiefs hosting the Showcase and we know they’ll do a first-rate job in promoting and executing a successful event."

The schedule of game matchups as well as ticket pricing and availability will be announced before the end of April. Chiefs president Glen Ringdal has also announced that Chiefs season ticket holders will be given first opportunity to select seats at reduced prices.

If you have any questions regarding this release or the event, please feel free to contact the BCHL office.

Brent Mutis

BCHL communications director

Penticton Vees Crowned BCHL Championship

What many predicted at the start of the season has come to pass. The talented and loaded roster of the Penticton Vees has lifted the Fred Page Cup winning the BCHL championship at the same time. A great accomplishment for a team that set a BCHL regular season record for wins and points in a season by sweeping the Coastal Conference champion Powell River Kings in four games.
The Penticton Vees with ex-Grizzlies and local Victoria boys, Wade Murphy who's scoring touch has really added to the Vees already top 3 scoring lines, the steady presence of Nick Buchanan in the defensive ranks and former Grizzlies training camp roster goaltender Chad Kautner. Kautner who came in and replaced all star goalie Michael Gartieg (who refused to report to the Grizzlies after he was traded from the Powell River Kings during the off season) really stepped in and won some big game for the Vees during there playoff run.

This juggernaut Vees team, will now go on to play either the Brooks Bandits (Dylan Nowarkowski's team) or the Fort McMurray Oil Barons who are competing in the AJHL final which is tied at 2-2 each in that 7 game series.
